Chapter 8

Jake The next two weeks seemed to pass by quickly. Jake and Sawyer spent most of that time just getting to know each other better. Their favourite thing lately had been to take walks around the grounds as they talked. Sawyer enthusiastically explained all about being a Mage, and what he knew that entailed. Jake spoke of being a wolf, the thrill of shifting, running, and hunting. There was also talk of Clan dynamics and his role as Kayan. Given that Sawyer had been orphaned so young, he really didn’t know much about their world, so he wasn’t surprised when the smaller man started asking questions.

“So why do you guys call yourselves a Clan? I assumed it would be Pack.”

Chuckling, he took Sawyer’s hand in his as they walked through the forest, past the smaller cabins. “Well, did you know it’s believed that all Wolf-Shifters are descendants of Turkic heritage?”

Shaking his cute little head, Sawyer looked up at him as if sensing there was a great story coming. His wide, expectant forest-green eyes stayed on him as Jake continued. “The legend of Asena is an old Turkic myth that tells of how the Turkic people came to be. The story goes that in China, a small Turkic village was raided by soldiers, but one small baby was left unharmed. An old she-wolf with a sky-blue mane named Asena found the baby and nursed him, and because of that the she-wolf gave birth to ten half-wolf, half-human cubs, creating the Turkic people.” Jake loved telling this story. There was just something magical about it.

“And Wolf-Shifters believe it was how we were created. Especially since Asena was a gray wolf, and it’s the only known breed of Wolf-Shifter. It’s also where the titles such as Kayan, Kayan e_, Yabyu, and such come from. They’re old Turkic or relations thereof.” It was the same story his father had taught Jake and his sister, Alexis, since they were children. Sharing it with his mate, who was just as intrigued by it, was an amazing feeling.

“Wow. What were the names of her ten sons?” Sawyer was practically vibrating with interest as he hopped from foot to foot.

“I only know of one, Ashina. As far as I know he became their leader and formed the Ashina Clan that ruled the Göktürks and other Turkic nomadic empires. At least, I think that’s how it goes. It’s been a long time since my father told me the stories.”

“They’re nice names, Ashina and Asena.” Sawyer smiled brightly up at him, and he couldn’t help but return it.

“I’ve always thought so.”

As their walks got longer and more frequent, Sawyer had asked him to shift, stating his wolf was an integral part of who he was, and he wanted to interact with him. Jake couldn’t have been more pleased. He could admit now that he had been concerned his other nature would have put Sawyer off. Some people were known to have trouble coming to terms with their dual natures.
